Amos 9:15

"I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them," says the LORD your God. Amos 9:15

Things are heating up around here...

...in many ways things are hot and getting hotter...

Probably least of importance, but not without consequence, for the past few days Israel has been experiencing a heat wave.  The entire country has been experiencing temperatures between 35-50 C (95-122 F).  In Jerusalem, being in the mountains, it has stayed around the mid 30s (mid 90s).  With no air conditioning in many apartments, including ours, that makes for some really uncomfortable days.  We've tried to do everything we can to stay cool and hydrated, while praying for the 3 boys that are still missing & the soldiers during this heat wave.

What else is heating up?  The entire Middle East region surrounding us.  As most of you know, it's not only Syria that is experiencing civil war with many murders occurring daily, but now Iraq.  The news coming from these nations are horrendous.  And now the Islamic terrorist groups are threatening Jordan, the country that borders Israel to the east.  The current ruling government in Jordan is actually a minority, and the fear is that it wouldn't take much for a civil war to start there as well.  There is talk of the US and Israel assisting Jordan if necessary.  As you can see from the map below, Israel is only about 70 miles at its widest, making Her very close to these troublesome nations.

What else is heating up?  As Ramadan began Saturday (Islam's "holy month"), we can only expect more acts of terror.  As written in the Times of Israel online news, "Ramadan is a time of heightened religious fervor and militants typically step up their attacks during the month.  Sunni extremists believe that attacks, especially suicide missions, during Ramadan are more blessed and rewarded by  (their god)."

What else is heating up?  At the same time, since the boys were kidnapped 12 June, Gaza has launched over 30 rockets into Israel, almost daily - a third of those being just the last 2 days.  Last night one of the rockets hit a factory, causing it to catch fire and four people were lightly injured.

While the Israel Air Force has responded, many feel something on a larger scale needs to take place to put an end to the rocket attacks.  The Defense Minister has said, "Don't test us." and the Prime Minister has said he won't allow it to continue.  We shall wait and see what takes place.  Below is how long people have to take cover before the rocket hits.  The places the recent rockets are hitting are in the 15-30 second areas.

What else is heating up?  It's been 2 ½ weeks since the kidnapping, and the IDF still has several thousand soldiers on foot searching for the 3 missing boys each and every hour of each day.  The challenge now is how to continue Operation Brother's Keeper in a way that doesn't spark riots during Ramadan.  Many of the IDF infantry units we've visited are involved in the searches, including Oketz - the canine special forces unit.

Getting ready to do a demonstration for us last November.

Puppy in training.

So what have we been doing during this past week during all this turmoil?  We were blessed to travel as a CFI staff to visit key Biblical sites in Samaria (known to the political world as the West Bank).  We were able to stand - as Christian's from the Nations - in solidarity with the men and women who live in this region and just by coming there say, "We support you.  Even with the unrest going on in our country right now, we are not afraid to visit the places where these brave people live."

Set up for yourself road marks, Place for yourself guideposts; Direct your mind to the highway, The way by which you went.  Return, O virgin of Israel, Return to these your cities."

Jeremiah 31:21

Our first stop as we headed due north from Jerusalem was the modern city of Bet El. "Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God..." Genesis 35:1

We were honored to be invited into the home of Rabbi Yehuda Bohrer, one of the founders of the city.  He shared with us the importance of the Jewish people returning to the heartland of their Biblical beginnings.  He told us that his experience has been that the Christians (who are coming to visit these areas) are the ones he knows can be trusted to stay by their side and to support them.  Rabbi Yehuda then went on the bus with us to the site of Jacob's dream - or as he said, Jacob's vision.

Rabbi Yehuda and our guide Moshe.

"Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.  And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.  Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.  Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”  Genesis 28:10-15

This is said to possibly be the oldest tree in Israel.

Next we traveled even farther north to Mount Gerizim, the Mountain of Blessing.  "Now it shall be, when the Lord your God has brought you into the land which you go to possess, that you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal."  Deuteronomy 11:29

From the top of this mountain, there is an amazing view of the rich heritage of Israel's Biblical history.  While we stood on Mount Gerizim, we looked across to Mount Ebal and could imagine the tribes of Israel fulfilling God's command as they stood on these mountains so very long ago.

Looking across at Mount Ebal.  You can see some of the excavations in the forefront on Mount Gerizim.

Below we had a clear view of the arab city Nablus (the ancient city of Shechem).

City of Nablus (ancient Shechem)

In this valley, below Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, is where Jacob's well is located.  Which also means this is where Yeshua (Jesus) spoke with the Samaritan woman. "He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But He needed to go through Samaria.  So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well."  John 4:3-6

The building with the red dome roof is the site of Jacob's well.

Shechem is also where the Israelites buried Joseph's bones after carrying them through the wilderness for 40 years, by Joseph's request not to be left in Egypt.  "Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” Genesis 50:25 "The bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel had brought up out of Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for one hundred pieces of silver, and which had become an inheritance of the children of Joseph."  Joshua 24:32

The building with the white dome roof in the center is the site of Joseph's Tomb.

The scripture above points out another fact discussed on our tour.  Three of the most contentious pieces of land in Israel right now are Jerusalem (the Temple Mount), Hevron (the Tomb of the Patriarchs - Abraham, Isaac & Jacob) and Nablus (Joseph's Tomb & Jacob's well).  What do all three of these properties have in common other than the fact that they are inhabited or controlled by the Palestinians?  Each of these properties were actually purchased with money by Jewish forefathers and documented in the Bible.  Not just a promise given from God - which is good enough - but a literal purchase recorded in God's Word - think about it...  And the world wants Israel to give up this land for a Palestinian state?

From here we traveled back south to the ancient city of Shiloh, where the Tabernacle stood for 369 years after the Israelites crossed the Jordan having travelled in the wilderness with it for 40 years.  "Now the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there."  Joshua 18:1  Recently (within the last year), the archeologists have discovered the actual spot they believe to be the site of the Tabernacle.

We have been to Shiloh a couple of times before, but each time it is unique and special.  This time, we found out that there are thousands of clay pottery shards that scatter the area from vessels that were broken for purity reasons during the time of the Tabernacle at Shiloh.  We were able to collect (by permission) several shards of this amazing bit of ancient history.

Another blessing of this particular trip to Shiloh was the honor of having David Rubin, a former mayor of modern Shiloh, speak to our group.  He shared the blessings and challenges of living in Samaria surrounded by people who would want to do you harm.  He also, like Rabbi Yehuda Bohrer, expressed the importance of rebuilding these ancient cities as God said they would do.  David told us of his personal tragedy of being a victim of terrorism 12 years ago, as he and his 3 year old son were driving through Samaria.  David was shot in the leg, and his son in the base of his head. By God's grace and miracles, they both survived and are doing well today.  David has since founded the Shiloh Israel Children's Fund for trauma therapy.  In the link below, David Rubin shares his heart for this region and the tragedy he faced.

David Rubin speaking to our group at Shiloh.

We would highly recommend touring this region - Samaria, the Biblical Heartland - if you ever plan to come to Israel.  We know it has made a great impact on us to understand the importance of why Israel cannot give away this Land.

Please pray for stability for our region.
Please pray for peace during Ramadan.
Please pray for a solution (God's solution) and an end to the rockets coming into Israel from Gaza.
Please continue to pray for Eyal, Gilad and Naftali to be found.
Please pray for the soldiers and intelligence team as they search for these boys.
Please pray for the families of these young men.

TRUTH or consequences

Shalom from Jerusalem...

A question, and a very popular topic here, is how do we separate politics from religion - or how to we separate our purpose and work here from the politics of the region?  The past few weeks and months have highlighted the fact that life here continues - in the midst of turmoil on every border, and within the State of Israel.  And life includes all aspects of things.  Sometimes  a question doesn't have to be answered, because the question is flawed.

Without getting into a history lesson, let's just say that the separation of "God and State" has led to many unfortunate consequences.   After all, if God is removed from the equation, and removed as a solution, then failure is certain.  Human politics typically do not involve including God, but rather purposely excluding Him.

So, for us, the question we ask ourselves everyday is...how do we know what side of an issue we should be be on?  Or how can we be certain that our views are correct?  This applies to all of the aspects of life going on around us.

What is the Truth?  Are there consequences for not adhering to the Truth, or dare I say the Law?  We believe we have no choice but to place the Word of God as the ultimate Truth decider.  Seriously, what other choice do we have?  If we believe God is the Creator, then He and He alone decides what is Truth and what is not.

God's Word must be the test for all things.

Some of the issues...

BRING BACK OUR BOYS:

Thank you for your continued prayers for the safe and quick return of Eyal, Gilad, and Naftali from the hands of terrorists.  The recent effort by the IDF has focused on caves and tunnels looking for the boys.

Search for teens - update

Realize that Hamas - a formally recognized terrorist organization - is behind this, and their intent is to ask Israel to once again release murderers and terrorists from Israeli prisons in exchange for the teens.  Israel, having given in to past prisoner releases, has proven that most criminals will return to their ways. A hard lesson they are reaping the consequences of.  As of today nearly 350 individuals have been arrested and detained as part of "Operation Brother's Keeper"; the majority of these are Hamas members and those released from prison.

YouTube video - IDF Chief of Staff Visits Troops Searching for Kidnapped Teens

I've met with soldiers this past week in Samaria and have seen the effects of 2-3 hours of sleep, and the intensity they operate under while seeking information and attempting to locate the boys.  Some of the soldiers cancelled their graduation ceremonies in order to work up to the very last minute of their enlistment to continue the efforts.

What is the Truth in the midst of this political ploy and cowardly act perpetrated by the terrorists?  It's quite simple...Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people.  And so, any attempt to divide, or deny, or annihilate, or destroy this Land or its people will be prayed against, and stood up against.  We would rather be "Godly" correct than "politically" correct.

Again, I won't get into a history lesson, but the right of Israel to be here can be proven Biblically, politically, legally, morally, and militarily.

Well, maybe one history lesson...

Palestine is a Geographical Area, Not a Nationality

All of the terrorists' acts of cowardice are attempts to persuade the world of a myth that a certain people group deserve to occupy Israel.  The TRUTH is that God has given the Title Deed to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Romans 9:4, Romans 11:1, Ephesians 2:17-18.

I am establishing my covenant between me and you, along with your descendants after you, generation after generation, as an everlasting covenant, to be God for you and for your descendants after you. I will give you and your descendants after you the land in which you are now foreigners, all the land of Kena‘an, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God.”  Genesis 17:7-8

TRUTH or consequences?

RECENT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH DECISION:

Surely not meaning to step on any toes here......

Presbyterian Church votes in favor of divestment

We wonder how the convenience of the separation of Church and State is used when it fits ones agenda.  The Church is silent in so many areas of society that have become corrupt..i.e. abortion, homosexuality, etc. but Israel is now a topic for votes, and how to spend it's money.  The Presbyterian Church leadership has purposed to divest itself from companies who do business in Israel.  Why?  They say Israel is occupying - Israel!!  And those who settle here are living in settlements.  Well, they are supposed to:

Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply." Jeremiah 23:3

"The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land.  Foreigners will join them and unite with the descendants of Jacob." Isaiah 14:1

How is Romans 11:11 reconciled in the minds of the leadership of this church?  How are we to separate politics form our daily lives?  We cannot.  Because now, we (Linda and I, along with CFI and other Christian organizations who believe God's Word) will be lumped together with this decision and will have to prove ourselves - again to our Jewish friends.  We'll have to gain their trust and explain that Christianity was not supposed to be a persecuting religion, but rather a religion of love and support of God's chosen people.   A provoking to jealousy, not to be confused with envy for Gentile Christianity, but rather a jealousy of what the Jewish people are called to be - a Light to the Nations (Isaiah 49:6, Luke 2:32, Acts 13:47) After all, why would a Jew be jealous for a religion that wants the Jews to leave Israel?

"I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Genesis 12:3

 TRUTH or consequences?

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

The WCC - an active organization in Israel.

Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI)

On many Friday afternoons, we will spot an organized protest of Christians against the "occupation" of Israel of the so-called West Bank.  The Bible calls this Land Judea and Samaria, Canaan or the Mountains of Israel.  These protests are in the center of Jerusalem, and for the most part, go unnoticed by the population.  Once in a while we'll see someone across the street waving an Israeli flag in support of God's Word.  We wonder what would happen if a group of 100 Jews went into Hebron, or Nablus, or Ramallah or Gaza and claimed the Palestinain Authority, or Hamas was 'occupying' the Land....

How can we separate politics from the every day life here?  We can't, because the politics of man keeps propping up itself, rather than the Truth of God's Word.  For our American friends, we dare not even remind you of the consequences of the current administration's policies which are significantly opposed to the Bible and God's ways.  The progressive and humanistic movements are quite obvious and harmful.  There is forgiveness of sin - but it must be asked for and repented of.  Thank God there is still hope!!

What is the 'occupied' territory?

We live in a place where Biblical prophesy and its fulfillment, along with the media headlines, converge on a daily basis.  We greet new immigrants from Ukraine at our Lighthouse Center.  We love and welcome them in the name of Yeshua.  We speak with soldiers and tell them that not only are they the physical guardians of the promise to Abraham, but that they are performing a righteous deed.  We visit survivors of the holocaust and encourage them to return to the God of their youth and ask them to trust His promise that He will never leave them nor forsake them.

We also visit victims of rockets from Gaza - where recently Hamas has re-united itself with the Palestinian Authority Government.  In the past two weeks since this unification - three boys from Judea have been kidnapped and more rockets have been fired into Israel than have been fired all year.  We visit war veterans and thank them for their service, as they wonder if this thing called war will ever end.  The opportunities to be a Light are endless.  Why?  Because man keeps forgetting who God is - and leaving Him out of the picture.

We pray for Divine intervention - in all things, but God has already given us His TRUTH.  So we pray for this TRUTH to be the litmus test in our daily lives.

Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Jeremiah 31:31-34

TRUTH or consequences?

And so, whether we like it or not, there are consequences for not aligning our thoughts and actions up with God's Word - His Truth.  And, yes, we realize we have much yet to learn, but while we are in the process, we can at least look to His Word for direction and purpose.  As a well known Pastor often says..."we may not have arrived, but we've definitely left."  We are learning.

All our love from Jerusalem, please continue to pray for her.

“Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today..."

Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Short update - Please continue to pray!

There's really not too much to update.  The officials have released the names and pictures of the 3 missing boys, ages 16-19.  They believe this is a hostage situation, where the terrorists will at some point request to return the boys for released prisoners.  This has occurred in the past, but they usually target soldiers.  What makes this even more unfathomable is that they're civilians.  The IDF has thwarted 30 kidnapping attempts last year, and 14 so far this year.

While hitchhiking is far too common in Israel, the authorities believe the boys trustingly got into a vehicle with Israeli license plates.  A burned-out Israeli car was found near Hevron, which is where the major search is going on.  IDF Parachute Brigade and other elite forces are involved in house to house operations.  So far 16 Hamas terrorists have been detained for questioning as the military tries to gain intelligence that will lead them to the boys.  The link below will direct you to a page with a one minute video showing the IDF searching for the boys.

http://www.jpost.com/Defense/Names-of-missing-teenage-yeshiva-students-released-359317

Please continue to pray for the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet (intelligence agency) as they search for these young boys.  Please also continue to pray for the families and loved ones, and especially for:

Naftali Frankel
Gilad Shaar
Eyal Yifrach

Thank you for the many responses and prayers of agreement.  As one friend replied...we will believe for the 4th man in the fire (Daniel 3) and we will trust in the Lord...

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;

I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.

Psalm 91:14-16
